Tony Jacklin Admits He Was Too Old To Win Strictly
Golf legend Tony Jacklin admitted that he “didn’t have the energy” to compete on Strictly Come Dancing after he became the first celebrity eliminated from the show.
The 69-year-old huffed, puffed and perspired his way though a hilarious Charleston to ‘Don’t Mean a Thing if it Ain’t Got That Swing.’ But his efforts, though valiant, were branded “limp, lame and lackluster” by the judging panel. He later failed to convince the judges of his worth and was voted off following a dance-off with designer Julien Macdonald.
Tony said afterwards when speaking to the Daily Mirror: “It is totally all consuming. I think I would have run away if security guards hadn’t been on the doors. I was pretty petrified.
“My best obviously wasn’t good enough. It was a terrific physical effort to do four hours a day. It was really taxing on me physically.
“I think anyone north of 50 it is going to be really tough on. I am pushing 70 and I really felt that physical aspect of it.
“If you combine that with the pressure of performing in front of millions of people and something totally new to you it is a daunting task. But I am glad I did it, I went into it as an adventure and it was.”
