Freak Snowstorm Stops Play In Arizona

THAW!!! Was the cry as a freak snowstorm sent golfers scurrying to the clubhouse at the WGC Match Play Championship, in Marana, Arizona on Wednesday. Play was suspended at 11.07 local time because of the driving rain and snow, with ice beginning to form on the greens.

Players reacted with a mix of bemusement and amusement as caddies swapped super-soft low-compression balls for the snow and ice variety in a titanic frozen battle not seen since Darth Vader sent a Death Squadron to Hoth in that Star Wars with the sad ending. Eye witness Ian Poulter tweeted ‘The caddies have officially just had a snow ball fight. Never seen anything like it.’

Conditions got so bad so quickly only 10 of the 64 first-round matches had yet to tee off when the snowstorm struck. But as the players posted pictures of a winter wonderland spare a thought for the fans, a few of which must have been under dressed in the cold. The Grand Canyon State hasn’t seen weather like this in a lifetime and no matter what time of year it is Arizona isn’t one of the places you’d expect to implement winter rules. Fortunately the frozen fans who missed out on seeing Wednesday's action have been told they can attend for no extra cost on Sunday.
