Obama Tees Off With Tiger

A couple of titans came together on the fairways when President Barack Obama was joined by Tiger Woods for a round of golf at The Floridian Golf and Yacht Club at the weekend.

The two met in January 2009, during Obama's inauguration in Washington. Four months later, in April, Woods visited the White House and Obama welcomed him into the Oval Office but this is the first time the two have met up for a round.

Obama, a keen basketball player and avid golfer, prepared as best he could spending eight hours receiving instruction and playing a few holes with Butch Harmon, Woods' former swing coach.

Your average person would be terrified spending time in such exalted company but the three men seemed to take the whole weekend in their stride with an unfazed Harmon saying before the meet, “I've played golf with Ike, Nixon, Ford and President Bush”. “I'm looking forward to it. It should be fun.”

The backslapping and high fives continued after the round with Obama describing Wood’s golf as from ‘a different planet’ and the former world number one saying "playing with Mr. President was pretty cool. He's just a wonderful person to be around."

The thorny issue of who won was sidestepped with the two most notable African Americans in their field joining forces against Jim Crane, a Houston businessman who owns the Floridian and Major League Baseball's Houston Astros, and outgoing U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk, a former mayor of Dallas.

Unsurprisingly Woods and his plus one emerged victorious. But even your Sunday hacker would fancy their chances in any given four ball with Butch Harmon in your corner and Tiger by their side.
