McIlroy ‘Nearly Gave Up Playing Golf’

Speaking ahead of the BMW Masters in Shanghai this Thursday (October 24), Rory McIlroy has admitted that he almost gave up golf as a teenager.

Sitting in the press room at a coaching day in Shanghai, the former world number one, currently lumbering in sixth, says that his family would have supported him regardless of the decisions he made.

"When I was about 15 or 16 I had a chat with my dad and said 'I don't know if I want to play golf any more'," McIlroy explained.

"My parents said they would support me whatever I decided to do; it's always been great to have supportive parents."

McIlroy then lent some time from his busy schedule to show children in China some of his skills before partaking in a Q&A with them afterwards.

The Northern Irishman is in action this week in Shanghai at the European Tour’s BMW Masters and has been paired with fellow countryman Graeme McDowell, as well as Sweden’s Henrik Stenson for the opening round of the event.
