Ballesteros Back As Calmels Leads

Javier Ballesteros, eldest son of the late, great Seve Ballesteros, made his European Challenge Tour debut in the inaugural Challenge de Madrid.

Ballesteros, who won the amateur Madrid Open last year, is yet to join the professional ranks and competed as a sponsor’s invite on the first Challenge Tour event of the 2013 season to be played on European soil.

The 22 year old, who is currently studying Law at Madrid’s Complutense University, couldn’t recreate the form he showed in his first appearance in a professional event at the Peugeot Alps de Barcelona on the Alps Tour last April, when he finished in a tie for 12th place, 12 shots behind European Tour champion Pablo Larrazábal.

Instead young Javier missed the cut bowing out five over par with rounds of 74 and 75.

It’s been a happier weekend for François Calmels. The 31 year old Frenchman had a blistring first round of 63 and followed it up with a 69 o lead the tournament by two shots at 12 under par.
